Magic potion for longer lasting lotions
Abstract:
Liquids like hand lotion are "emulsions" of tiny droplets, oily compounds dispersed in water. The coating of the droplets makes all the difference between a good and bad mixture.
Nano-silica can be used to form a protective shell around the droplets. The thickness of the shell can be modified to adjust the rate of drug delivery.
"Coating the tiny emulsion droplets with silica increases the stability of the mixture and makes it less likely that the active compounds inside will degrade or be released until we want it to happen," Dr Eskandar said.
