Abstract:
World Class Research Institute Will Use World's Most Powerful Commercially-Available Microscope to Investigate New Materials and Structures Down to the Atomic Scale
FEI Company (FEIC 19.48, -0.38, -1.91%), a leading scientific instrumentation company providing electron microscopy systems for nanoscale applications across many industries, has successfully completed the installation of its Titan(TM) scanning/transmission electron microscope (S/TEM) at the Zaragoza University Institute of Nanoscience of Aragon (INA), located in Spain. By providing direct access to structural and analytical information down to the atomic level, the Titan S/TEM will play an essential role in all three of the institute's primary interest areas: the physics of nanosystems, nanobiomedicine and nanomaterials.
"The Titan is unique in its ability to visualize and analyze natural and synthetic materials at the nanoscale and below," stated Prof. Ricardo Ibarra from the Univ. of Zaragoza, INA's director. "The bulk behavior of most materials is determined by properties and interactions at this very small scale. We expect the Titan to be an indispensible tool in our efforts to design and create new materials, nanodevices, sensors and actuators that will provide our society with new, leading products, solutions and applications."

The INA was created in April 2003 by the government of Aragon, Spain at the University of Zaragoza. In its "National Plan for Research 2008-2011," Spain identified nanoscience as a strategic capability, underscoring the importance of the establishment of world-class infrastructures within the institute. In addition to premier facilities and instrumental capabilities, the institute includes high-level experts in many fields: physics, chemistry, engineering, biochemistry and medicine, allowing it to perform multidisciplinary research using all branches of knowledge to address topics in nanoscience. Advanced microsocpes, such as the Titan S/TEM, will constitute the core of the new facility, known as the ICTS (National Spanish Advanced Microscopy Laboratory-LMA), for the scientific community to share.
