NMMU to get first look at atoms

Abstract:
The imminent arrival in Nelson Mandela Bay of a state-of-the- art, Japanese-made electron microscope - one of just 15 on order in the world - will allow scientists to see atoms for the first time in South Africa and enable them to compete with the world's best.

For Jan Neethling - the Bay physics professor who has fought for two decades for South Africa to acquire a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) - the victory is significant. It is also a feather in the cap for the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) - the country's leading academic institution in the field of nanoscience and electron microscopy, where materials are analysed at miniscule levels.
