Abstract:
Gerald M. Dykstra has been designated as one of nine TAPPI Fellows for 2010. Dykstra is retired from Buckman as Pulp and Paper Technology Director, Research and Development. Fellow is an honorary title bestowed upon less than one percent of TAPPI's membership. It is given to individuals who have made extraordinary technical or service contributions to the industry and/or the Association.

"Gerald's contributions, especially in research and development, have advanced the pulp and paper industry significantly," said Larry N. Montague, President and CEO of TAPPI. "He has been and continues to be an invaluable asset to TAPPI, publishing numerous articles and holding important patents. Additionally, he was instrumental in developing organizational policy especially as related to the Paper and Board Manufacturing Division."

Dykstra graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. degree in chemistry. He earned his executive M.B.A. from the University of Memphis as well.

His career in research and development includes service at Abbott Laboratories, Corn Products International, Central Soya, Nalco Chemical Company, and Sun Chemical Company. Most recently he served 22 years with Buckman, from which he retired in 2007. He holds nearly a half-dozen patents in papermaking processes. Additionally, he has been extensively published. He has specialized in wet-end chemistry, traditional and enzymatic deposit control, retention/drainage management, creping additives, wet and dry strength additives, and coating applications.

Dykstra has actively served TAPPI in a variety of committees and chairmanships. They include the Paper and Board Technical Program Committee and Steering Committee, Papermaking Additives Committee, Paper and Board Divisions Community Development Transition team and the TAPPI Community of Leaders. He has been active in several TAPPI conference planning committees including Nanotechnology, PIMA and PaperCon and has been a presenter and session chair in past conferences. Dykstra was a TAPPI Ambassador.

His public service includes being active in his community church and he has served in various leadership and training roles with the Boy Scouts of America. He is currently part of the editorial team of BioResources Journal. He lives in Bartlett, Tenn., USA.

Dykstra and the other new TAPPI Fellows will be honored at the TAPPI Fellows Luncheon, Sunday, May 2, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency, Atlanta, GA, USA in conjunction with the 2010 PaperCon meeting (www.papercon.org).
