The honor, bestowed each year by the Forum, recognizes and acknowledges between 100 and 200 outstanding young leaders from around the world for their professional accomplishments, commitment to society and potential to contribute to shaping the future of the world.

The Forum has nominated Young Global Leaders from 72 countries, including business leaders, as well as leaders from government, academia, non-profit organizations, media and society. The new class represents all regions: East Asia (43), Europe (46), the Middle East and North Africa (14), North America (38), South Asia (21), sub-Saharan Africa (17) and Latin America (18).

Drawn from a pool of thousands of candidates, the Young Global Leaders 2010 were chosen by a selection committee, chaired by H.M. Queen Rania Al Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, comprising 31 eminent international media leaders.

Rachel Maddow of MSNBC, the tennis player Roger Federer, and the co-founder of Twitter, Evan Williams, are among those selected this year. Recipients in prior years include the co-founders of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, and the television journalist Anderson Cooper.

Gupta, a second-generation Indian-American, is the Senior Vice President and Advisor to the Executive Chairman of Abraxis BioScience (NASDAQ: ABII), a leading pharmaceutical and health-care innovator based in the United States with offices throughout the world.

Prior to joining Abraxis, Gupta was recruited to serve as the Director of Social Enterprise at Intel Corporation by then General Counsel, Bruce Sewell, now General Counsel of Apple Computer. Earlier, Gupta served as the Chief Financial Officer and Director of Strategy for Dossia, a social-enterprise sponsored by Intel, Wal-Mart, Pitney-Bowes, AT&T, sanofi-aventis, Cardinal Health, Vanguard Health, Abraxis BioScience, Applied Materials, and BP America. At Dossia, Gupta served the Executive Committee, led by Dr. Craig Barrett, the retired Chairman and CEO of Intel, Michael J. Critelli, the retired Chairman and CEO of Pitney-Bowes, Inc., Jean-Paul Gagnon, the Chairman of the Dossia Consortium and Director at sanofi-aventis, and Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong.

Gupta was previously Managing Director and Founder of REALSTRATEGY, a boutique strategy consulting firm based in the United States, and was also a Partner at Geo Health Partners, an investment partnership which focused on health care investments domestically and internationally. In his role as Director of Social Enterprise for Intel, Gupta researched and promoted models for investment in social enterprise and their potential for stimulating disruptive innovation in developing economies.

Gupta was educated at the University of Oxford, where he earned his MBA and was a member of Merton College. He earned his AB in Philosophy at Georgetown University and also studied Bioethics at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. He has served as a Board member and advisor to numerous start-ups with a particular interest in sustainable social enterprise.
