City native acclaimed for his duct tape for doctors
Abstract:
Jeffrey Karp doesn't mind it when his breakthrough medical development is referred to as "duct tape for doctors." In fact, he says, it makes perfect sense.
"I think people are more intrigued if there's an interesting story attached to the project," he said. "Here we are combining nanotechnology with geckos and biomedicine; it creates that intrigue people like."
Karp's team is currently testing the tape on small animals like mice, with four to six months of clinical testing ahead.
"We may tweak the adhesive and repeat the trials, or move on to larger animals that more closely mimic humans," he said.
Human trials could be three to four years away, he said, but that could change.
