A mosaic called Jerusalem
Abstract:
Resource harnessing and management is the focus of research at the Weizmann Institute of Science which breathes the motto of its founder, Dr Chaim Weizmann, a leader of the world Zionist movement and the nation's first President. A scientist, statesman and thinker, he had said, "Science will bring peace to this country and renew her youth." Nobel-grade scientists here are working furiously to fulfil that vision, building bridges between all people. We meet Dr Boris Rybtchinski, who is part of a team that is developing a light-harvesting paint for cars and exterior surfaces by marrying organic chemistry with nanotechnology. It's cheaper than inorganic synthesis which uses silicon. "My research deals with self-assembly of photosynthetic materials in a water base." They are building nanostructures that link two very different types of nano-particles — metals and semi-conductors — using organic molecules.
Dr Boris is looking at an incubation period of about a decade but once it fructifies, an hour of effective harnessing of solar power can take care of the annual energy requirement of the US! It can produce electricity, save power and fossil fuels. In the future, solar nanostructures on external surfaces could even be adapted for various purposes, such as using sunlight to destroy pollutants in air. Dr Boris has Indian students working with him, one of the most dominant groups among foreign researchers.
