'Americans are tougher than the times we face'
Abstract:
By Katie Couric: Our health: After a depressing decade, a number of positive developments have emerged in the field of medicine. For the first half of the decade, the number of new cancer cases has been dropping, on average, by 1% a year, and cancer deaths have fallen by more than 1.5% a year. It's gratifying to see that the resources we've been pouring into research and treatment for this deadly disease have had a positive effect. Advances in genome research and nanotechnology hold even more promise for combating cancer. Unfortunately, the obesity epidemic wears on. Fully two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and a third are considered to be obese. Obesity is related to myriad health problems, and if it's not controlled, health care costs will be even more astronomical in the years ahead.
