Uni-Kool Project advances, dodges backlash

Abstract:
A 257-acre agricultural industrial park that is expected to generate more than 4,000 jobs is quietly making its way through Salinas City Hall. This month the Planning Commission, on a 6-1 vote, recommended the City Council approve the Uni-Kool development, which would be located just south of city limits. "This project offers our region the kind of step forward in innovation and opportunity that the local agricultural economy needs," says Planning Commissioner Steve McShane.

The industrial park, which the council is expected to rubber stamp on Jan. 19, will allow vegetable shippers and processors to relocate to the park and upgrade existing operations to incorporate food safety and traceability elements, says Mayor Dennis Donohue, adding that it could also attract new businesses, possibly related to nanotechnology research.
