Abstract:
UMass Lowell, in partnership with Queen's University of Belfast and Dublin City University, will host the first U.S./Ireland Emerging Technologies Conference.
The international event - Monday, Oct. 19 and Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center - will feature experts in new research in biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, nanotechnology and more. Leading companies will present on manufacturing and product development.
"UMass Lowell, Queen's University and Dublin City University share common goals of contributing to the innovation economy in their respective regions, each pursuing research in burgeoning industry sectors that present promise to grow businesses, create jobs, and answer critical needs in the community," said UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan.
The conference offers a unique opportunity to interact with researchers and discover opportunities to collaborate on the next generation of products. Registration is open through Friday, Oct. 16 (discount ends Oct. 1); for details, see www.uml.edu/emergingtech.
Topics will range from new biomaterials for bone repair and living cells for sensors to monitor environmental conditions to the challenges of clinical trials.
"This event offers the public the chance to tap into the expertise of academics and researchers from around the world in technologies that are the future of the global economy," said Prof. Stephen McCarthy of the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2).
Each university hosts research centers that bring together resources and knowledge from the public and private sectors, including Dublin City University's Biomedical Diagnostics Institute, Queen's University's Polymers Research Center and UMass Lowell's Massachusetts BioManufacturing Center, NSF Center for High-rate Nanomanufacturing and M2D2. Ireland's Center for BioAnalytical Sciences will also participate in the conference.
"This is a great illustration of how international partnerships can result in a first-class conference on areas that are the frontier of advancement in science and are very important to the economy," said UMass Lowell Provost Ahmed Abdelal.
