Description:

The Pittsburgh Technology Council's soon-to-be-released State of the Industry Report for the 13 contiguous counties of southwestern Pennsylvania reveal that there are more than 5,500 technology firms employing in excess of 140,000 people with a total annual payroll of $9 billion.

When factoring in the health services industry as a component of the life sciences cluster, the number of establishments increases to more than 8,400, employing nearly 250,000 with a total annual payroll of $14.5 billion.

The Council's periodic State of the Industry Report tracks company, employment and payroll data in industry clusters including information technology, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, advanced materials, environmental and energy technologies.

"Pittsburgh is indeed fortunate to have been chosen by President Obama as the site of the G-20 summit this month," said Audrey Russo, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Technology Council, "and we believe that this region's transformation to one that values innovative industries, entrepreneurship and technology is evident in the historical perspective and documentation found in the material we posted. We invite the world's media to examine why the Pittsburgh region has a depth and breadth of technology than perhaps any other city its size."
