The names of the first Kavli Prize Laureates were announced in Oslo and New York simultaneously May 28, 2008. The announcement was part of the opening of the World Science Festival at Columbia University. Present in New York: Reidun Sirevåg, Secretary General of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, Fred Kavli, Michael Blomberg, Mayor of New York and the actor Alan Alda.

Abstract:
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters announces the Call for nominations for the 2010 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics, Nanoscience and Neuroscience. The nomination period is September 1 - December 15, 2009. Everybody can nominate candidates with the exception that self-nominations will not be accepted. Nominations should be submitted to the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters using the online nomination form, available at www.kavliprize.no

2010 Kavli Prizes in Astrophysics, Nanoscience and Neuroscience: Call for Nominations

The nominations will be reviewed by three committees of leading international scientists within each of the scientific fields. The board of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters will make its descision based on the prize committees' recommendations. The winners of the Kavli Prize 2010 will be announced by the Academy's President in June next year.

The Kavli Prize will be awarded for outstanding achievements in advancing our knowledge and understanding in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience. The Kavli Prize for each of these scientific fields consists of USD 1,000,000. The Kavli Laureates receive a gold medal, a scroll and a diploma in addition to the prize money. The Kavli Prize will be awarded at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway in September 2010.

The Kavli Prize was established in 2005 and is a partnership between the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Kavli Foundation (US) and the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. The Kavli Prize is awarded every second year.
