NIH Director Collins: an old hand in a new job

Abstract:
Dr. Francis Collins is best known as the former director of the NIH National Human Genome Research Institute, which, 6 years ago, completed work on mapping the entire human DNA genome. In addition, that institute under his direction has done groundbreaking work in identifying genes that cause diabetes, cystic fibrosis, Huntington's disease, neurofibromatosis and progeria.

"(We must) apply the truly remarkable opportunities that are coming from high-throughput technologies, such as nanotechnology, chemistry, imaging, genomics, computational biology, and environmental science. All of those areas undergoing real revolutions in their abilities to collect datasets that are really quote comprehensive about how life works, and sometimes, how something goes wrong, and disease occurs."
