Abstract:
Iranian researchers at the University of Science and Technology managed to synthesize alumina-zirconia nanocomposite using a method efficient in repairing tooth, tooth roots and broken jaw bones.

Nanocomposites Contribute to Denture Strength

Tehran, Iran | Posted on August 9th, 2009

According to the Iranian Nanotechnology Initiative Council, the alumina-zirconia nanocomposite contributes a role in a lot of applications in medicine and industry concerning its mechanical properties and high strength.

"The cutting tool made of alumina-zirconia nanocomposite has longer life and more depth than the alumina one because of the existence of zirconia in the alumina background," Mehdi Ibrahimi Basabi, one of the researchers said, referring to the applications of the nanocomposite.

"Alumina nanocomposite also shows desired biological properties owing to bio-consistency, great resistance to erosion and the chemical neutralization of alumina," Ibrahimi added.

Elaborating on the production process of this material, he underlined that Aluminum Chloride, Zirconium (IV) chloride, and Calcium Oxide are mixed together as the raw materials; then, the mixture undergoes mechanical work by a high energy mill.

"Along with the mechanical work and heat treatment at low temperatures the reactions among the raw materials lead to the formation of alpha alumina and zirconia nanoparticles with cubic structure," Ibrahimi reiterated.
