Shape matters: The bizarre case of cobalt cubes and spheres
Abstract:
On the nanoscale, shape often dictates physical properties in more
profound ways than size can. NIST researchers showed that this is true of
cobalt nanoparticles—magnetic material commonly researched for its
magnetic and catalytic properties—which were subjected to different
experiments in both 10 nm spheres and 50 nm cubes. When exposed to beams
under transmission microscopes, the large cubes melted far more readily
than the spheres.
