Nanotechnology could spark compensation payouts
Abstract:
TONY EASTLEY: A leading occupational health and safety lawyer is warning employers they could be facing big compensation payments if they don't carefully consider the implications of nanotechnology.
In the next decade as more products use nanotechnology the industry is forecast to grow from US$32-billion to more than US$2.5-trillion a year.
But there's debate about its safety. Environmental groups and unions want new regulations to ensure the safety of workers and consumers. Meanwhile businesses are not sure about their responsibilities, as Ashley Hall reports.
ASHLEY HALL: To one of the nation's leading work safety lawyers, the nanotechnology industry represents a ticking time bomb.
MICHAEL TOOMA: Employers at the moment may be unaware of the extent of the potential liability sometime down the track.
