Abstract:
Leading Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) systems manufacturer Picosun Oy, Finland, has opened a new laboratory, R&D and production facility in Kirkkonummi, some 30 kilometres West of Helsinki city centre.
"So far, our R&D and laboratory needs have been satisfied with the ALD equipment at the VTT facilities in Otaniemi. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is the biggest multi-technological applied research organization in Northern Europe, and historically the first ever customer of Picosun. VTT is a part of the Finnish innovation system under the domain of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. We also have had the pleasure of working together with our various scientific partners, the University of Helsinki having been the first among those. I am happy to report, however, that we have grown out of the original mould", says Kustaa Poutiainen, Chief Executive Officer of Picosun.
Picosun will continue to use the outstanding clean room facilities at VTT Micronova, equipped with Picosun SUNALE™ ALD reactors. Picosun's HQ will also continue to exist at Micronova, located near the Otaniemi campus area of the Helsinki University of Technology. All other functions, connected to purchasing, production, research and development and most deposition services have already been transferred to the new facility.
The facility also hosts other functions of Picosun's parent Stephen Industries Inc Oy. Picosun took over its new premises following a lengthy process of rebuilding them to meet the rigorous requirements of both laboratory standard and security.
"At the laboratory we have already installed reactors for our own use. Having exclusive access to a number of reactors is a big step forward for us and will, surely, lead to leaps in the technology and processes offered by Picosun", says Sven Lindfors, Picosun's Chief Technology Officer. "Having our own laboratory and R&D facilities allows us more freedom in experimenting with new and revolutionizing reactor designs and ALD processes."
One production client of Picosun has already benefited from the capacity of the new premises. A novel production technique for a very specific production need was developed by Picosun's R&D experts.
Picosun develops and manufactures Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) reactors for micro- and nanotechnology applications. Picosun represents continuity to over three decades of ALD reactor manufacturing in Finland. Picosun is based in Espoo, Finland and has its US headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. SUNALE™ ALD process tools are installed in various universities, research institutes and companies across Europe, USA and Asia.
Dr Tuomo Suntola, inventor of ALD technology, is Member of the Board of Directors of Picosun. World's most experienced ALD reactor designer Sven Lindfors is Picosun´s Chief Technology Officer and one of the founders of the company. Picosun Oy is a part of Stephen Industries Inc Oy.
