Gates Foundation awards $1 million in grants for 'crazy' ideas
Abstract:
Other local recipients of the Gates $100,000 "crazy" science grants are: Dmitry Shayakhmetov, a University of Washington geneticist using cold viruses to attack tuberculosis; James Kublin, at Fred Hutch, who will explore the use of robots in mimicking malaria infection; UW bioengineer François Baneyx, who will use nanotechnology to improve vaccine performance; and Pradipsinh Rathod, a UW chemist looking into how to mess with the malaria parasite genome to retard its ability to evolve and evade drugs or vaccines.
