IBM could back out of standards organizations
Abstract:
IBM said today that it will reconsider its membership in the hundreds of bodies that create global standards for everything from software to servers.
The company's announcement may seem arcane. But it's actually an important one for IBM (NYSE: IBM), which has headquarters in Armonk, N.Y., and conducts research at the Albany NanoTech research complex.
That's because standards organizations, as they're called, help shape the future of hundreds of new technologies. A company that's able to get its own technology adopted as an industry standard is at a major competitive advantage. And IBM is a key player in a majority of such decisions because of the company's broad intellectual property portfolio.
On Tuesday, IBM said organizations that set international standards don't always act transparently and fairly.
