State provides $981K to train workers in nanotech, health care, energy
Abstract:
Businesses in the Albany, N.Y., region got a slice of state aid on Monday to fund their employee training and internship programs.
Most of the $981,000 in state funds supports regional efforts to attract and train skilled workers in "emerging industries" including health care, nanotechnology, energy and advanced manufacturing. The remaining $430,000 was set aside to support worker training programs and internships at businesses.
Statewide, the Department of Labor announced $26 million in similar investments. Patricia Smith, the state's labor commissioner, also touted federal tax credits for employers who hire young employees, including teenagers, who live in certain eligible areas.
"We have to get a digitally prepared work force ... especially if AMD moves into town," said Dan Gentile, an area work force official with the New York Association of Training and Employment Professionals Inc.
