Queen's professors capture research grant
Abstract:
Two Queen's professors have been awarded a $4.2-million nanotechnology special opportunity research grant by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, National Research Council of Canada and the Business Development Bank of Canada.
Stephen Hughes and James Stotz, both professors of physics, engineering physics and astronomy, will use the funding for a project to develop new computing and encryption technologies using "nano-sized" particles of light.
Hughes will co-lead the project with Robin Williams, a Queen's adjunct professor who works with the NRC. The project is entitled "Nanostructured Single and Entangled Photon Sources for Quantum Information Processing."

Queen's professor Cathy Cahill was one of eight Canadian researchers to be presented with the prestigious Pfizer Canada Neuropathic Pain Research Award.
Neuropathic pain is a disease caused by injury or dysfunction of the brain, nerves or spinal cord. An estimated 2.2 million Canadians suffer from the condition.
