Spherical lab unveiled at UCSB turns science into sights, sounds

Abstract:
At UC Santa Barbara, art is being used to push the limits of science and engineering.

Complex mathematical data is being translated into visual representation and sound that gives scientists a new way to interact with the information and make discoveries.

The AlloSphere, at the California Nanosystems Institute at UCSB, already has helped researchers gain insight into new bonds and discover potential uses for future exploration.

In a recent demonstration at the AlloSphere, visitors learned about a multicenter bond involving hydrogen that could be used for clean energy.

"By doing these visualizations, we can actually find some very unusual information," Chris Van de Walle, a materials science professor who has studied the bond, told the crowd.
