Home > Press > Eugene Science CZTM Sterols to Be Launched in New Japanese Cosmetic Product Line; Company Targets Global Distribution
Abstract:
Eugene Science Inc. (OTCBB: EUSI), a leader in the nutraceutical marketplace with its cholesterol lowering CholZero (CZ™) plant sterols, today announced it has agreed to sell its patented, nano-sized CZ™ plant sterols to Japan-based Kokumin Pharmaceuticals for launch in a new scientifically advanced cosmetic product line.
Kokumin Pharmaceuticals is an OEM manufacturer for cosmetic lines including internationally acclaimed Shiseido. Initially, Kokumin intends to market and distribute a moisturizing cream containing Eugene Science's nano processed plant sterols -- RIMOR -- to the Japanese market in the second quarter of 2008. Founded in 1935 and with annual sales of approximately $110 million, Osaka, Japan-based Kokumin is also one of the largest drugstore companies in Japan with over 200 retail stores known for a wide range of quality health and beauty products; (http://www.kokumin.co.jp/english/index.html.)
Eugene Science is in discussion with other companies worldwide as it pursues the establishment of joint venture agreements to create, market and distribute cosmetic products containing the Company's unique CZ™ nano-sized sterols. Industry analysts recently reported that in 2006, the cosmetics and toiletries industry posted its highest growth rate since 2001; skin care, with sales of $60.1 billion in 2006, is the largest C&T sector.
"The cosmetic industry is enormous, and Eugene Science is developing a joint venture business model for introducing future cosmetic products containing our patented CZ™ worldwide," said Seung Kwon Noh, Chief Executive Officer, Eugene Science.
"Japan is a highly sophisticated marketplace for nutraceutical products, and the ideal country to launch what we believe to be the cosmetic industry's state-of-the-art in an anti-aging and beautifying moisture crème," Noh said. "Kokumin is a top tier and well respected cosmetic OEM manufacturer and retailer and is well positioned for successful launch into this market."
CZ™ Plant Sterols Benefits on Skin
While plant sterols have long been recognized for their health benefit on human skin, conventional sterols are not water-dispersible and can only be added to oil-based cosmetic products greatly limiting their utility. The unique water-dispersible feature of the Company's nano-sized CZ™ sterols, however, enables these sterols to be added to all cosmetic products.
The elemental structure of soy bean-based plant sterols resembles that of cholesterol, which is a key component in human skin composition. Until now, plant sterols were predominantly used as a functional food ingredient which suppresses the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestines -- but also serves as a key component to retain moisture in the skin and hair.
Plant sterols benefits include:
(1) Boost epidermal moisture retention internally
(2) Strengthen protective skin barrier with external stimulation
(3) Convenient topical delivery and absorption
Nano-size Plant Sterol Functional Mechanism
The nano sized particles allow the plant sterols to be applied through a topical delivery permeating the dermal layer dramatically more effectively than conventional sterols.
Similar to hair cell complex, intercellular lipid in the skin consists of ceramide, fatty acid, and cholesterol. Since plant sterol resembles cholesterol, supplying plant sterol to damaged stratum corneum or aged skin (lamellar structure is broken) can strengthen its barrier. In addition, compared to other sterols, the molecule size of Eugene Science nano-scale plant sterol (300nm) molecule enables it to easily pass through the epidermal layer and assist formation of lamellar structure internally. It also enables the skin to retain its moisture.
