A world strip of humanity - inside the virtual reality websites where you can live out your wildest (and darkest) fantasies

Abstract:
Britain's National Physical Laboratory has supported the launch of the "Nanotechnology Island" where scientists based around the world can "meet" and stage discussions.

Companies buy a virtual "island" and invite, say, their most senior managers to attend a conference.

But instead of everyone travelling there at vast expense in time and business-class air fares (not to mention adding to global warming) they send their avatars, who interact with one another as their real world controllers send instructions or messages across the world wide web.
