Centre to partly fund the cost of advanced R&D by biotech firms

Abstract:
The SCPP idea has been approved in principle, but would be placed before the government for formalization within a month. Meanwhile, DBT has sought industry proposals until March. Unlike the Small Business Innovation Research Initiative, or Sbiri, which is meant for small-and medium enterprises, SCPP is open to companies of all sizes.

"This would enable the industry to invest in areas like RNA interference, or RNAi, (a naturally occurring process that suppresses certain gene activity in cells and has evolved into a therapeutic technique to modulate the activity of single genes), nanotechnology-based fluidics, stem cells, et al., where the industry is currently not investing," said S. Natesh, a senior adviser at DBT in New Delhi. It would also include technologies for orphan crops, such as drought-resistant wheat and rice, those that can deal with environmental calamities, drugs and vaccines for national emergencies, and in such areas where initial commercialization looks unattractive for the industry.
