Abstract:
300 area students participating in NanoCareer Day at CNSE's Albany NanoTech complex see what are believed to be the first cereal boxes in US with nanotechnology education.
A hearty serving of nanotechnology designed to spark an interest in math and science is now part of the breakfast menu for children throughout the Northeast, thanks to a new cereal box -believed to be the first in the United States with
information on nanotechnology - developed exclusively by Price Chopper Supermarkets as part of the "Spotlight on Science" initiative with the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering ("CNSE") of the University at Albany.
Three hundred middle- and high-school students from 11 schools throughout the Tech Valley region received a first look at the new cereal boxes during a visit to CNSE's Albany NanoTech complex for NanoCareer Day, a daylong event featuring presentations, tours and interactive demonstrations designed to address the national need to stimulate an interest in math and science among America's younger generation.
"Price Chopper is thrilled to be collaborating with educators from the University at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering on this unique Œbreakfast lesson' that nourishes the mind," said Mona Golub, VP of Public Relations and Consumer Services for the progressive supermarket chain. "Given all of the technological distraction that cyberspace makes accessible to kids, it is truly rewarding to be able to impart relevant educational messages to them, via our Price Chopper brand cereal boxes, during those less distracting moments of their everyday lives," she added.
"The UAlbany NanoCollege is delighted to partner with Price Chopper Supermarkets in the Spotlight on Science initiative to help educate on the wonders of nanotechnology and open the door to the exciting world of math and science," said Dr. Alain E. Kaloyeros, Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of CNSE. "We recognize and applaud Price Chopper Supermarkets for thinking Œout of the box' - in this case, literally - and for helping address the critical need to spark interest in science and math among our children. The Spotlight on Science Initiative is a great step in that direction, and we look forward to working closer with Price Chopper in the future to continue advancing this important initiative."
Boxes of Price Chopper's Koo-Kies and Peanut Butter Cocoa Spheres cereals, which feature kid-friendly information on the growing impact of nanotechnology on society, are now on store shelves in 116 Price Chopper stores in New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.
The cereal boxes define nanotechnology and discuss the role it is playing in improving our quality of life, from better cell phones and video games to new medical treatments and alternative energy sources. Children are urged to study math and science to become educated about the field that may define their careers as adults, and invited to learn more by visiting the website of CNSE, ranked this year by Small Times magazine as the world's number one college for nanotechnology and microtechnology.
The cereal boxes also feature photos from the cleanrooms and laboratories inside CNSE's Albany NanoTech complex, a $4.2 billion education, research, development and commercialization facility that is the most advanced at any university in the world.
According to the National Science Foundation, the U.S. will need more than two million nanotechnology-savvy workers by 2014. Of those, 20 percent are expected to be scientists, with the remaining 80 percent consisting of highly skilled engineers, technicians, business leaders, economists and others. The National Science Foundation projects that the nanotechnology job market will require expertise ranging from two-year associate degrees to doctoral degrees.
Schools participating in NanoCareer Day, and their counties, included: Watervliet Jr/Sr High School (Albany), Woodland Hill Montessori School (Rensselaer), St. Anne Institute (Albany), Ichabod Crane Middle School (Columbia), Queensbury Middle School (Warren), North Albany Academy (Albany), Knickerbacker Middle School/Lansingburgh Central School (Rensselaer), Menands School District (Albany), The Albany Academies (Albany), Troy High School (Rensselaer) and Cambridge High School (Washington).
Nothing herein constitutes an endorsement by the University at Albany College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering or the State University of New York, either express or implied, of any of the products referred to herein.

About CNSE
The UAlbany CNSE is the first college in the world dedicated to research, development, education, and deployment in the emerging disciplines of nanoscience, nanoengineering, nanobioscience, and nanoeconomics. In May 2007, it was ranked as the world's number one college for nanotechnology and microtechnology in the Annual College Ranking by Small Times magazine. CNSE's Albany NanoTech complex is the most advanced research facility of its kind at any university in the world: a $4.2 billion, 450,000-square-foot complex that attracts corporate partners from around the world and offers students a one-of-a-kind academic experience. The UAlbany NanoCollege houses the only fully-integrated, 300mm wafer, computer chip pilot prototyping and demonstration line within 65,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms. More than 1,800 scientists, researchers, engineers, students, and faculty work on site at CNSE's Albany NanoTech complex, including IBM, AMD, SONY, Toshiba, Qimonda, Honeywell, ASML, Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, and Freescale. An expansion currently underway will increase the size of CNSE's Albany NanoTech complex to over 750,000 square feet, including over 80,000 square feet of Class 1 cleanroom space, to house over 2,000 scientists, researchers, engineers, students, and faculty by the end of 2008.
