Abstract:
NASA Langley Research Center and the Tidewater Chapter of Sigma Xi are partnering for the first time to host a series of "Science Cafes" beginning on Sept. 22, with a discussion on "Renewable Energy and Alternative Fuels."
Free and open to the public, the Science Cafe will be held from 4 - 6 p.m. at Aroma's Coffeehouse and Bakeshop at City Center at Oyster Point, 706 Town Center Drive, Suite 104, Newport News.
Tarek Abdel-Fattah of Christopher Newport University will lead the cafe discussion. An expert in the manufacture and use of nanomaterials for environmental cleanup, Abdel-Fattah's research has recently expanded to include the manufacture of biodiesel and the use of organic/inorganic hybrid materials in the production of solar cells.
An increasingly popular forum for scientists and engineers to discuss topics in the news, the cafes allow researchers to share their work with lay people in a casual, accessible setting.
"The Science Cafe is a great way for our members to engage in a meaningful dialog with the public about matters that concern everyone," said Andrew Velkey, secretary of the Tidewater Chapter of Sigma Xi and one of the event's lead organizers.
"During this particular Science Cafe, we want Dr. Abdel-Fattah to help the public better understand the science behind renewable energy and alternative fuels. Because of the increased interest in reducing the United States' dependence on foreign sources of energy, this is an issue of interest to all of us," added Katie Lorentz of the Science Directorate at NASA Langley.
Refreshments will be available for purchase, and Abdel-Fattah will answer questions throughout the event.
