World's most successful junior is from Turkey
Abstract:
Assistant Professor Hilmi Volkan Demir from Bilkent University Nanotechnology Research Center has been honored as the "World's Most Successful Junior" by the prominent leadership and social entrepreneurship organization, the Junior Chamber International (JCI), reported the daily Hürriyet yesterday.
Demir, along with three colleagues and students, recently developed a light source called Light Emitting Diode (LED). LED is composed of nanocrystals and can be used as an alternative to light bulbs. The difference between a LED and a regular light bulb is that instead of producing light from heat, LED converts electricity directly to light. "A LED can be used for 23 years if used 12 hours a day. We can considerably reduce carbon emissions by using LEDs not only in households but also for headlamps [in cars]," said Demir.
