Tech engineers study nanotubes and magnetic fields
Abstract:
New Mexico Tech materials engineers recently became the first to confirm a method of characterizing miniscule tubes, which shows how people can use them.
Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Assistant Professor Nikolai Kalugin is leading a team at Tech and collaborating with scientists in Florida, Washington and Europe.
The members did different stages in the project, which showed that magnetic fields would turn properties of carbon nanotubes — which have sizes in the range of ten-millioneths of a centimeter (or four-hundred-millionths of an inch) — from metallic to semiconductor.
