Playgen’s NanoMission in featured in BusinessWeek: New Game Modules Released

London, UK | Posted on July 26th, 2007

The http://images.businessweek.com/ss/07/07/0711_nanogames/index_01.htm BusinessWeek article features a slide show of images from the latest modules to be released, Nanoimaging and Scaling.

Nanoimaging features the Phenom table top electron microscope and was developed in association with FEI, a global leader in providing innovative instruments for nanoscale imaging, analysis and prototyping. The Scaling module enables players to visualize and understand spatial relationships between objects at scales from pico-meters (diameter of atoms) all the way up to giga-meters (diameter of the Sun).

The award from the Wellcome Trust will be used to develop a full version of NanoMedicine module as a real-time strategy game aimed at educating 12-16 year olds about the applications of nanotechnologies in biomedicine. The award also allows the game to be fully evaluated as an educational tool, with trials planned in schools across the UK.

PlayGen Managing Director Kam Memarzia commented "PlayGen's main objective is to enhance player's lives by inspiring and educating them through providing fun and richly interactive environments based on real science. The Wellcome Trust funding means that the resulting game can be distributed to all, irrespective of their income."

Project advisor Tim Harper added "The falling numbers of science and engineering students in Western Europe and the US will have a real economic impact in an increasingly technology dependent society. It is vitally important that the technology community supports projects such as Nanomission to ensure that our economies can remain competitive in the 21st Century."
