Tech chemists work on cancer therapy
Abstract:
The chemists have been shining invisible infrared light on coated miniscule particles, called nanoparticles, to start a reaction that kills tumors. Nanoparticles' sizes are in the range of millionths of a millimeter. Zhang said chemists start with coating a nanoparticle with glass or a polymer.
"This coating is very, very thin; it is nanometers," he said.
During the process, scientists can embed photodynamic drugs already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the coating. They can also chemically attach molecules such as antibodies that will attach the particle to a target cell, making the treatment selective.
