DNA computer chip door to a brave new world
Abstract:
Results of a Massey University evaluation on an Albany company's breakthrough for a computer chip made from DNA molecules will soon be released.
It will hopefully conclude the work is indeed possible, says a spokesman.
Physicist Graemme Brown of GBR Research has developed a computer chip made from DNA molecules - the building blocks of life - that can store and execute computer programmes.
The DNA tablet can be swallowed or inserted into the body and used to track down genetic defects and some illnesses.
It will be used with current technology and also open up a new scientific frontier for biocomputing.
A DNA molecule contains up to 100 billion instructions for building a human body, vastly more powerful than any computer.
Mr Brown has previously described the implications for its use as "staggering".
A statement announcing the breakthrough in October says it has the potential to create nanotech biocomputers much more powerful than what is achieved with current silicone technology.
