Deakin plans for a Silicon Valley

Abstract:
WAURN Ponds could become Australia's Silicon Valley under a multi-million dollar Deakin plan to radically expand its technology precinct.

Deakin vice-chancellor Sally Walker unveiled the university's major five-year-plan to the Geelong Advertiser yesterday and said lobbying was already well underway in Spring St and Canberra to secure the $25 million needed to kick-off the project.

But she said the university was not rushing into the project which would have to be staged over several years.

``The Geelong tech-precinct is currently part of a two hectare building. I'd like another two hectare building in the next three to five years, and I'd like $25 million to help get this up and running,'' Ms Walker said.

The precinct is already home to four core research areas of biotechnology, nanotechnology, prototyping and wine science.
