Cell phones turned into emergency-alert devices
Abstract:
MERCURY DETECTION: A technique to quickly and easily pinpoint mercury contamination of lakes, streams and rivers has been developed by Northwestern University researchers.
Using nanotech gold particles, the technology would enable environmentalists to detect mercury contamination on the spot without taking samples to a laboratory for lengthy analysis, said Chad Mirkin, the NU chemistry professor who led the research effort.
"Most existing detection methods require expensive, complicated equipment," said Mirkin. "Our method is simpler, faster, and more convenient, and results can be read with the naked eye at the point of use."
