Abstract:
Technology Advances Luring New Entrants to Industry
New healthcare
technologies, from nanoparticle diagnostics to cellular microarrays, are
attracting many new high-tech entrants to the healthcare industry, all
looking to redirect core competencies to new and potentially lucrative
applications for healthcare products and services. How do these companies
leverage existing knowledge, invest in basic research, license the latest
technology and build new partnerships?
For some stimulating ideas, they need look no further than the 2007 MIT
Healthcare Industries Conference, the third annual Life Sciences Conference
offered by the MIT Industrial Liaison Program. Held May 9-10 at the Wong
Auditorium in MIT's Tang Center, the day-and-a-half conference will feature
MIT research with potential applications to emerging opportunities in the
healthcare industry. Technologies to be discussed span the fields of
information technology and informatics, imaging and diagnostics,
nanomaterials for medical applications and microfluidic medical-assistive
devices.
"The Institute has long been well-known for its research in medical
devices and associated hardware," observes Rutledge Ellis-Behnke, Ph.D,
research scientist in MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, and
one of the conference's featured speakers. Ellis-Behnke will show
conference attendees how the intersection of nanotechnology and healthcare
has yielded substantial breakthroughs in drug research, development and
formulation, as well as in the field of diagnostics. The centerpiece of his
talk will focus on the use of nanotechnology to repair the brain and show
return of function, and the creation of a nano hemostatic agent that
promptly stops bleeding, while also providing a clear visual operating
field to a surgeon.
The Healthcare Industries Conference is part of the MIT Industrial
Liaison Program's Technology and the Corporation conference series. More
information on the conference, including complete agenda and abstracts, can
