India's healthcare sector is all set for a boom with British companies exhibiting growing enthusiasm for tie-ups with the healthcare firms in this country. The center of these tie-ups is going to be West Bengal and the IT firms in this region.
The forecasted boom in Kolkata's healthcare sector - with Bangladeshis and people form other neighboring countries seeking treatment here - tie-ups with the IT firms for medical software, opportunities for the SEZs, and low salaried employees are few of the major attractions drawing British firms towards India. The subject of Indo-UK partnership emerged during the interactive session at the healthcare seminar of India and UK. A delegation of healthcare representatives and professionals was on a weeklong tour to India that ended on March 6, 2007. The purpose of the visit was to explore the partnership opportunities or joint programs in the fields of nanotechnology, genetics etc in this country. The delegation held talks with the representatives of private hospitals in Kolkota.
"The seminar was held for exploring opportunities of partnership between India and the UK healthcare sector. We are interested to invest in the healthcare services like medical equipment, in knowledge sharing of the recent development in the medical sector, genetic disorder services in Kolkata, medical software, training and overall into the public-private partnership (PPP) venture", Kevin McCole, British Deputy High Commission, Kolkata said this in a statement that was published by IndianMuslims.info on 5 March, 2007.
McCole said that NHS (National Health Service) of Britain, with US$ 100 Billion's annual budget, was also eager to invest in PPP ventures with India's healthcare system. Discussions were underway with the government and Planning Commission of India as per McCole.
Besides British firms showing their interest in making investment here, Indian medical technology firms are also looking up to export equipment in the UK.
