Stem-cell work boon for UMass, WMass
Abstract:
The committee recommends investing $66.4 million in the institute over the next six years. Funds would be used to establish facilities, hire faculty and acquire equipment. The investment would build on a $2.5 million investment made by the Legislature in 2006 to UMass Medical School.
The UMass Board of Trustees will review the plan on Wednesday when it meets in Worcester. UMass is already well-positioned in a number of exciting new fields from nanotechnology to polymers - and its leap into the stem-cell research arena is a wise strategic move.
