February 28th, 2007
Abstract:
Most of us don't think much about the air we breathe at the office, but building codes generally require the use of ventilation systems to bring in fresh outdoor air. Powering the associated heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems can boost energy costs. So many owners install air-to-air heat exchangers that use energy from the exhaust air stream to precondition incoming fresh air before it enters the HVAC system.
Nanotechnology from Dais Analytic is helping to make such equipment significantly more energy-efficient and cost-effective. Founded in 1993, Dais has developed polymer-based membranes chemically modified to incorporate ion-rich nanodomains that measure between 20 to 50 nanometers in diameter. These differ from the polymers that are produced by leading polymer material companies such as Du Pont (nyse: DD - news - people ), Dow Chemical (nyse: DOW - news - people ), BASF (nyse: BF - news - people ), Pall (nyse: PLL - news - people ) and W.L. Gore & Associates.
