Abstract:
The development of novel nanostructured catalysts by Nanothinx S.A. has led to a dramatic reduction in the production cost, and subsequently in the prices, of high-purity multi-wall carbon nanotubes produced by chemical vapor deposition.

Low-Cost Production of High-Purity Carbon Nanotubes

Rio-Patras, Greece | Posted on February 12th, 2007

Nanothinx supplies its customers with high quality "as-produced" multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) of various purities (up to 97%) and thin multi-wall carbon nanotubes (TH-MWNTs) in quantities ranging from grams to kilograms at very competitive prices. Work is also carried out towards the large-scale development of high-purity single-wall (SWNTs) and double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWNTs).
The proprietary technology of Nanothinx originates from the research work of Dr. Stratis Sotirchos, Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Rochester, NY, and Research Director at FORTH/ICE-HT (deceased in 2004). Nanothinx researchers have invented an upscaling process, which can lead to the production of tons of carbon nanotubes with a yield, which is much higher than the ones reported in the literature and by other CNTs manufacturers.

Advantages of Nanothinx Technology

-Low-cost production of carbon nanotubes
-High production yield that leads to high purity of "as-produced" carbon nanotubes. Capability of obtaining any purity level by extending the reaction time.
-Minimal levels of amorphous carbon or other impurities that degrade CNTs properties

Current R&D Activities

In addition to carbon nanotubes, Nanothinx also offers R&D services on the process engineering of systems in which nanotubes are employed. NTX works closely with European organizations for the development of CNTs composites. Representative research projects are:
1.Surface modification and tailoring of the chemical functionality of carbon nanotubes towards polymer matrix structures and organic solvents (resins, PVC, PMMA, DMAA, etc.).

2.Development of a CNT-based artificial vector for in-vivo gene therapy (in collaboration with European partners, STREP "NINIVE").

3.CNTs-based substrates of nanostructured catalysts for use in PEM fuel cell's electrodes.
