University collaboration in a 'nanoscale' machining project will have a macro payback
Abstract:
The project aimed to develop a machine tool capable of attaining 50nm accuracy with staggering 5nm repeatability. In addition, it aimed to make that machine perhaps one-tenth the size of anything before and at one-tenth of the price.
It had to remain suitable for mass production of micro-components for use within small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector.
Andy Joslin of Delta Tau explains: The four-year project, which involved 36 partnering organisations from 13 countries with eight of the participants drawn from the UK; the highest number from any single country and the University focused on developing multiaxis machine tools able to produce complex 3D geometry's to nanoscale tolerances.
