Clarkson University Professor Sergiy Minko to Speak at Nano Science and Technology Institute

Potsdam, NY | Posted on January 25th, 2007

Minko is one of five speakers to present to 4, 000 attendees in the polymer nanotech symposium, one of the fastest growing areas of the nanotech conferences. All courses are presented by leading experts in their respective fields. Minko will discuss "Design and Fabrication of Nanopatterned Polymer Brushes with Applications as Switchable Microfluidics Gates."

The study of microfluidic devices has led to vast technological advances. Some common applications of microfluidics technology are ink-jet printing and biochips used for analyses of DNA or drugs.

Minko relocated to the United States from the Institute for Polymer Research in Dresden, Germany, in 2003, when he was appointed as Egon Matijevic chaired professor and leader of Clarkson's NanoStructured Materials Group, an interdisciplinary research team focused on the study and fabrication of synthetic "smart" materials and biomaterials on a nanoscale and the scale of single molecules.

Minko's own research and expertise in materials science focuses on the areas of smart/responsive polymer materials, smart colloids, nanostructured thin polymer films, formation of nanowires and nanoparticles, adhesion, wetting, adsorption regulations, and single molecule devices.

Minko received his doctoral degree in organic chemistry from Lviv Polytechnic University in 1983 and a doctorate of science in macromolecular chemistry in 1993 from the Institute of Physical Chemistry at the National Academy of Sciences in Ukraine. Minko is a member of the American Chemical Society and has 14 patents and more than 100 professional publications.
