Elevator To The Top

Abstract:
Today, some clear-headed scientists ... want to create an elevator that extends from a platform on the Pacific Ocean up to an orbiting satellite.

Such a "vertical railroad," as Clarke called it, could open up a new economy for space exploration, travel and business, says Marc Schwager of the nonprofit Spaceward Foundation. "The economics are very convincing," Schwager said.
