Invest in R&D, Canada urged
Abstract:
Canada may be living high on the riches of an oil boom, but the country could be short-changing itself in the long run by failing to invest enough in education and innovation, the inventor of the BlackBerry warned yesterday. He pointed to "very large nations" that are investing heavily in university research and infrastructure programs that help bridge the gap between innovation and commercialization.
One of Canada's most generous philanthropists, he donated $100 million toward the creation of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and more than $50 million to nanotechnology and quantum computer centres at the University of Waterloo.
