How close is the Space Elevator?

Abstract:
This page is a live record of the state-of-the-art in tether technology. The idea behind the page is to build, over the course of several years, a perspective on the progress and the outlook of tether technology. It is sometimes difficult, from a single vantage point in time, to get a feeling of how fast the industry is progressing. Where were we 2 years ago? Where did we think 2 years ago that we will be today?
