GE scientists power up alt energy efforts
Abstract:
"Solar is where wind was 15 or 20 years ago," Vlatkovic said, with costs, at 35 cents per kilowatt-hour, "significantly higher." Using materials other than expensive silicon -- some scientists talk about using plastics instead -- and improving design could help bring costs down.
And here, one of the Niskayuna research center's strengths comes into play. Scientists working in nanotechnology research this summer announced they had created carbon nanotubes that produce electricity when exposed to light.
