Sculpting traps for nanoparticles

Abstract:
Nanoscale particles in solution diffuse along random, brownian trajectories. A new device opposes this meandering tendency with electrical forces that can be tuned to make arbitrarily shaped traps.

Adam Cohen of Stanford University is able to mould the confining forces of his ABEL (anti-brownian electrophoretic) trap to any shape, just by reprogramming the voltages applied to a series of control electrodes.
