Why Nanotechnology is Important for the Semiconductor Industry
Abstract:
The semiconductor industry is rapidly reaching a point in its evolution where its ability to build smaller nodes will encounter serious difficulties in the form of quantum effects and atomic level statistical fluctuations. IBM's CTO has proclaimed the end of CMOS scaling, blaming leakage and gate oxide non-linearity. Other problems for further scaling CMOS include power consumption, heat dissipation and escalating fab costs. Such issues soon will become a serious barrier to creating workable semiconductor products. NanoMarkets says that nanotechnology will both help keep CMOS scaling on track and enable new materials/technology platforms that satisfy market needs better than CMOS.
