Silicon marches on

Abstract:
Computer circuits once filled rooms with vacuum tubes; they are now smaller than your fingernail. Thousands of transistors can fit inside a red blood cell. Chips continue to shrink and get faster. And that means they can go just about everywhere. Computer chips are in our household appliances, our cars, our gastrointestinal tracts. What was a supercomputer is now the family desktop. And what was nanotechnology is now just technology.
