Abstract:
Photonic crystals, materials with periodic microstructures that 'reject' light in a certain wavelength range, can be valuable components of a photonic technology, helping to direct and confine light for transmitting and processing information. Researchers in the USA and England have figured out how to cast these delicate structures from a natural mould: the mineral skeletons of sea urchins.
