Chip makers feel heat to solve power problem
Abstract:
Some semiconductor chips now run so hot you can fry an egg on top of them. The reason: As designers pack more and more transistors into tinier spaces in the quest for ever-faster computing, chips generate excessive heat -- as much as five times the heat per square inch a stove produces. And so engineers who once pursued speed over all else now are racing to make chips run cooler -- before the trillion-dollar electronics industry faces a meltdown.
